The Materials Management course, with a seat time of one hour, aims to provide general information about the importance and relevance of materials management, some basic strategies for maintaining resource inventory, and some of the considerations necessary for the movement and selection of materials, including the environmental impact.

  • • Identify safe practices for storing materials.

Managing the Movement of Materials

Given customer demands, the student will be able to make effective and cost-efficient decisions on how to best move materials from one location to another. Specifically, the student should be able to:
  • • Recognize the benefits and limitations associated with the modes of transportation used to distribute materials.
  • • Select an appropriate transportation mode given demands on cost, speed, or quantity.

Selecting Materials and Ensuring Sustainability

Given a bill of materials, the student will be able to weigh decisions on materials based on a variety of considerations, including cost, price, and environmental impact. Specifically, the student should be able to:
  • • List strategies for the selection of material resources.
  • • Identify considerations of material, cost, and source on the selection of materials.
  • • Recognize that minimizing the environmental impact of materials has long-term benefits.
  • • Describe eco-friendly practices for sustainable materials management.
